Q1　Why do young children (5~11) need vaccination?

A1  The proportion of children within the total of those becoming infected nationwide is increasing. Cases of moderate to serious ilness are being confirmed among children, especially among those with underlying conditions etc, creating a need to provide an oppurtunity to be vaccinated for children who have a higher risk of worsening symptoms. It was also decided to proceed with vaccinations for children in anticipation of the future spread of several variant strains. Q3   Is vaccination of children absolutely required?

A3  There is no obligation for children ages 5~11to be vaccinated. When children do receive the vaccine, we ask that the parents acquire correct information regarding both the effects of infection prevention and the risk of side effects and that the vaccination be performed as per the wishes of the parent. There are no vaccinations performed without express approval of the parent. One must never attempt to force those around them to receive vaccination or discriminate against those who haven't been vaccinated.

Q4　Is the amount contained in the vaccine and number of times the same as adults?

A4　 For young children, two shots separated by three weeks of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine are administered, with each shot containing 10㎍ (0.2ml). Shots for individuals 12 and older contain 30㎍ (0.3ml), which makes the amount of each children's shot one-third of the amount of each shot for individuals 12 and older.

Q5　What kinds of side-effects can occur with the vaccine for young children?

A5　Similarly to individuals 12 years or older, most common is pain at the site of injection. Various other side-effects have been confirmed, such as feelings of fatigue, headaches, and fevers. Based on the majority of these being light to moderate followed by recovery, as well as on information currently available, they have been judged to create no significant concern for safety.

A6　Basing on their age at the time of their 1st shot, your child's 2nd shot will also be the vaccine for children ages 5~11. 

Q7　After the vaccine ticket for my 11 year old arrived, their 12th birthday came before they had their 1st shot. Will they be receiving the ages 5~11 vaccine, or the ages 12 and older vaccine?

A7　Basing on their age at the time of their 1st shot, they would be receiving the ages 12 and older vaccine twice. The vaccine ticket that arrived when they were 11 can be used as is.

Q8　How much space should there be between receiving this vaccine and other vaccines?

A8　If your child will be receiving other vaccinations before or after their COVID-19 vaccine, please allow for a space of 13 days or more between them.
