皆さん、ハイタイ！

私は米須シンディーあゆみと言います。ブラジルのサンパウロ市生まれの三世です。２０１２年に浦添市の南米研修生事業に参加しました。よろしくお願いします。今回の「南米からのおたより」では、私の父、米須保が行ったウチナーグチの保存活動についてお話ししたいと思います。

２００８年、ブラジルへの日本からの移民は１００周年を迎えました。このイベントを一緒に祝うために、沖縄からブラジルに渡った家族もおり、そのほとんどが初めて来ています。祖父のいとこイズミガワ・ヒロシは、ブラジルにいる沖縄の子孫の中にウチナーグチがまだつかわれていることに驚いていましたが、若い世代が沖縄のルーツから遠ざかっていることにも気づきました。そこで彼は父に「ウチナーグチを絶やさないでください」と頼みました。

２００９年に、米須保は自らの手で、ボランティアの先生方２名と「ウチナーグチ研究会」を結成しました。その２名の名前はミヤギ・ヨチとタカヤス・ヒロハルです。レッスンは毎週月曜日に「Associacao Okinawa de Viula Carrao」（ビラ・カラオ地域）で行われ、ウチナーグチを学びたい人ならだれでも参加できるようになっています。

ウチナーグチ・ポルトガル語辞典は、ルシラ・ギボさんからのプレゼントで、レッスンの際にとても役立っています。ルシラさん、どうもありがとうございました！

コロナの影響で、その活動を２年間休止していました。幸いなことに、今年は活動を再開することができました。現在、タケヨシ・テルヤ先生とウエハラ・ヒロシ先生のお二人で、３０歳から８１歳まで２０名の生徒がいます。

私は現在ドイツに住んでいるので、残念ながらそのレッスンに参加できませんが、私も是非ウチナーグチを習いたいと思います。

最後に、父からのメッセージを：「若い世代には、この言語を文化遺産として維持するよう努力してほしいです。私たちの大切な宝物なのです。」

Haitai everyone!

My name is Cindy Ayumi Komesu. I am sansei, born in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil. In 2012 I participated in the Urasoe City trainee program, yoroshiku onegai itashimasu. For this ‘Letters from South America’ I would like to share a story about preservation efforts of the Uchinaguchi language coordinated by my father, Mr. Tamotsu Komesu.

In 2008, the Japanese immigration to Brazil completed its 100th anniversary. To celebrate this event together, some family members traveled from Okinawa to Brazil, most of them for the first time. My grandfather’s cousin, Mr. Hiroshi Izumigawa, was amazed that Uchinaguchi is still spoken by some Okinawan descendants in Brazil, but he also noticed that the younger generation has grown distant to their Okinawan roots. He then asked my father to please not let the Uchinaguchi language die.In 2009, Mr. Tamotsu Komesu took the matter into his own hands and organized a Uchinaguchi study group with two volunteers senseis: Mr. Yoti Miyagi and Mr. Hiroharu Takayasu.The lessons are held every Monday in the ‘Associacao Okinawa de Vila Carrao’ (Shibu in Vila Carrao) and are open for everyone that is interested to learn Uchinaguchi.

The dictionary Uchinaguchi-Portuguese was a courtesy of Ms. Lucila Gibo and is a great help during the lessons, thank you very much Lucila san.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the group had the activities on hold for 2 years. Fortunately, this year they were able to return their activities. Currently the senseis are Mr. Takeyoshi Teruya and Mr. Hiroshi Uehara and the group has 20 students with ages varying from 30 to 81 years old.

I am currently living in Germany, so unfortunately, I cannot join the lessons, but I would love to learn Uchinaguchi too.

To finish this letter, I have a message from my father: ‘I would like the younger generation to try to keep this language as a cultural heritage. It's our great treasure.’
