Quánzhōu (泉州市)
Quánzhōu City in Fújiàn, China was established as Urasoe's international friendship city in September, 1988.
Quánzhōu is located on the south east coast of Fújiàn with a population of about 829 million people and covering an area of roughly 11,015km2.
Many Chinese emmigrants trace their roots back to Quánzhōu, including many Han Taiwanese. Exchange between the Urasoe and Quánzhōu can be traced back to the Ryukyu Dynasty.
In order to open up trade between Urasoe and China, King Satto sent a tribute via envoy, who subsequently arrived in Quánzhōu, which was also the starting point for public relations between Ryukyu and China. Thereafter, a long period of exchange continued between Ryukyu (Okinawa) and China, which had a significant impact on Okinawa's manners, customs, and unique culture. In 1981, Urasoe began sending academic and cultural survey delegations to China, which further strengthened relations between the two countries.
With a long-lasting history of exchange, Urasoe and Quánzhōu formally established one another as friendship cities in 1988, leading to a variety of exchanges in culture, economics, arts, sports, and education, as well as youth delegation exchanges. September, 2018 marked the 30 year anniversary of friendship between Urasoe and Quánzhōu, where Urasoe hosted a delegation from Quánzhōu and held a ceremony of cultural exchange, further strengthening their bonds of friendship.
In addition, the Board of Education in both cities sends and hosts elementary and junior high school student delegations biannually.
Gamagōri (蒲郡市)
Gamagōri City in Aichi Prefecture was established as Urasoe's domestic friendship city in November, 1981.
Gamagōri is located almost in the center of Honshu in the south east region of Aichi Prefecture with a population of about 82,000 people and covering an area of 56km2.
The city is designated as the Mikawa Bay National Park and is a scenic and quiet sightseeing spot located along the Mikawa Bay coastline.
Exchange with Gamagōri began in 1962, when a memorial was constructed in Urasoe Castle Site to pay respects to the soldiers that hailed from Aichi Prefecture. This relationship continued for nearly 20 years, beginning before Okinawa was returned to Japan when voyage reglations were strict. On November 4, 1981, a signing ceremony took place at the Gamagōri Community Center, establishing Urasoe and Gamagōri as friendship cities.
Currently, Urasoe and Gamagōri have continued to send and host delegations through sports and cultural exchange such as the Tedako Festival and Gamagōri Festival for over 35 years.
