Japanese seismic scale



The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) publishes a table summarizing the JMA seismic intensity scale at the following link.

Safety measures




  • Have enough bottled water and non-perishable food to last a few days

  • Have a flashlight with batteries or candles for power outages

  • Have a portable radio with batteries

  • Make sure all objects in your home are secured

  • Have a first aid kit available

  • Have some money in cash available

  • Have your passport and other important documents readily available



 



Earthquake action plan























In the event of an earthquake

  • Take shelter underneath a table, etc.

  • Protect yourself from falling furniture and objects

  • If possible, put out any fires and gas

  • Open all doors and windows and secure an exit


Post 1 ~ 2 minutes

  • Quickly put out any fires

  • Confirm safety of family

  • Wear shoes to prevent injury from broken glass

  • Prepare an evacuation kit (flashlight with batteries, rations, bottled water, important documents, first aid kit, cellphone, radio, etc.)


Post 3 minutes

  • Confirm safety of neighbors (especially the elderly and those living alone)

  • Be prepared for aftershocks


Post 5 minutes

  • Listen to the radio for information and updates

  • Refrain from using your cellphone

  • Evacuate the building if it is unsafe

  • Confirm the nearest evacuation shelter
